The project In 2025/26, the Worpswede museums are celebrating the 150th birthday of Paula Modersohn-Becker - today by far the most famous artist Worpswede has produced. Under the title 'Half of Heaven. Paula Modersohn-Becker and her fellow artists', the museums are showing this painter in the context of like-minded female artists who ventured into a self-determined existence around 1900. The exhibition will be shown from June 2025 to March 2026 and includes Paula Modersohn-Becker's 150th birthday on 8 February 2026.
During her lifetime, Paula Modersohn-Becker was barely recognised as an independent artist and was forced to create and develop as a painter on her own, away from the established art scene. With great confidence in her own artistic potential and never ceasing to work, in the ten years between her arrival in Worpswede in 1897 and her early death in 1907 she succeeded in creating a body of work that was impressive in scope and unrivalled in its expressiveness and modernity. She followed her own life impulses with great consistency and defended them - even in her artistic marriage - against social conventions. The sincerity with which she gave an account of herself in her work and in her diaries and letters made her an outstanding pioneer of female - and ultimately: human-individual - self-determination. With her art and the straightforward way she lived her life, she set an example that continues to have an impact today.
Even today, the demand for equal rights for women and for the compatibility of family and career is still a central social issue. At the same time, life has changed fundamentally over the past 125 years. Living together in multicultural, diverse societies and in a global community characterised by extreme inequalities and political and cultural conflicts requires a far more complex understanding of equality today: Any answer that excludes overarching contexts such as ecological intergenerational justice, climate justice and the wide gap between rich and poor countries remains incomplete. Equality has thus become a universal issue today - a fundamental question that challenges us to radically scrutinise our lifestyle, our role in society and in the world, our image of humanity and our idea of a good and just life.
A central aspect of the planned anniversary exhibition is not to stop at Paula Modersohn-Becker and her time, but to build a bridge to the present. The impulses that Paula Modersohn-Becker set around 1900 are to be taken up from a current perspective and with contemporary artistic positions and carried forward into the present day. The working title for this section of the exhibition is: 'The indivisible sky. Equality in a global context'.
The scholarship To this end, the Worpswede Museums and the Künstlerhäuser Worpswede are jointly awarding a work grant. A three-month work phase is planned, which will take place on site. In addition to a studio apartment, the scholarship also includes a contribution towards living, material and travelling expenses totalling €2,500 per month. The three-month core work phase is to take place between 1 July and 30 September 2024. If necessary, the period can also be organised more flexibly in consultation with the artistic directors of the Künstlerhäuser Worpswede and the Große Kunstschau Worpswede.
During the fellowship, the artistic directors of the Künstlerhäuser will provide support in terms of content and organisation. An essential component of the of the scholarship is the close exchange with the curators of the anniversary exhibition 'Die Hälfte des Himmels. Paula Modersohn-Becker and her fellow artists' with regard to a desired participation in the exhibition. A separate material costs budget is provided for the realisation of the exhibition participation.
The application The call for applications is aimed at artists working professionally in the visual arts. A degree from an art academy or comparable institution and/or proof of permanent activity as a professional artist (solo exhibitions, catalogues, regular exhibition activity in art institutions) is expected. There are no restrictions in terms of place of residence or residence, artistic approaches and/or techniques, nor is there an age limit. Children or Children or partners are welcome by arrangement and for a small contribution towards incidental costs.
