PreMortem

23/6 —25/6 2017

From June 23–25 2017, the feminist platform CALL together with the artist residency Künstlerhäuser Worpswede invite you to the convention “PRE MORTEM – (Anti-) Aging for Artists” on the compounds of the Martin Kausche studios.

In the former artist colony in the historical town Worpswede, the topics of ageing and death will be discussed in the context of art and feminism in joint workshops, lectures, experiments, performances and film screenings. “PRE MORTEM” refers to the time of our physical existence in this world. The inevitability of death and the confrontation with it, in particular with regard to the digitization in all spheres of life, is gaining in relevance in the artistic debate,as well as in art historiography and its valuation systems. Fundamental technological changes give rise to hopes of dissolving entrenched societal structures and, last but not least, death itself. “PRE MORTEM” also refers to the fact that feminism, with its hitherto existing aims, seems to be on the verge of dying, either, be it by prominent and manifold absorption or by an anti-feminist backlash. But may it have died numerous times, feminism is also experiencing constant revivals: Thereʻs life in the old dog yet.

CALL considers this convention acontemporary format that softens the understanding of actor and audience, of activity and passivity, and allows for numerous smaller presentations, spontaneous performances and a variety of contributions.

At the Worpswede Martin-Kausche-Studios, artists, researchers, craftspeople and activists from different disciplines are brought together – as they will at “PRE MORTEM – (Anti-) Aging for Artists”. Workshops and symposia bring individual ideas into an exchange, academics and groups follow their own projects. Life, health, (anti-) aging, death and cultural heritage – with forward-looking ideas, political utopias and physical care, we address these topics at the feminist convention “PRE MORTEM – (Anti-) Aging for Artists ”.

A Convention with Urte Alfs, Rebecca Beachy, Jennifer Bennett, Ruth Bennett, Melanie Bonajo, Nika Breithaupt, Lea Connert, Marlene Denningmann, Carola Deye, Fabienne Dumont, Annette Frick, Jessica Halm, Gitte Jabs, Ida Lennartsson, Lina Launhardt, Angelika Lepper, Hanne Lippard, Hanne Loreck, Manon, Seven Neves, Silke Nowak, Astrid Kajsa Nylander, Ursula Panhans- Bühler, Roseline Rannoch, Marie Rotkopf, Franziska Schnoor, Bettina Sefkow, Linda Spjut, Tatjana Turanskyj, Timm Ulrichs, Anne Cathrin Ulikowski, Claudia Zweifel

Witches of Worpswede
Fabienne Dumont, Marie Rotkopf
Between derision and “aging art”, what is the space for a feminist thought on ageism? Inquiring history/art history, we intend to develop a feminist perspective on the aging body and its surrounding ideologies.

„Memorial / Postmortem“ – How do you want to be remembered when you're dead?
Ida Lennartsson

Workshop

Alt und immer noch nicht weltberühmt oder Von der Angst, vergessen zu werden
Jennifer Bennett, Timm Ulrichs
Timm Ulrichs is an artist constantly trying to broaden the boundaries of art towards life. In 1961 he declared himself the first living work of art and calls himself a “total art work”. The conversation between Jennifer Bennett and Timm Ulrichs concerns questions of death and transience, memory, letting go and transformation.
Talk

Was passiert mit der Kunst, die zurückbleibt?
Bettina Sefkow, Silke Nowak, Carola Deye
The heritage of successful artists will usually be managed by their gallery. But what happens to the artwork left by an unknown artist? How do we handle such heritage, and how can these issues be sorted out pre mortem? What is it actually, that we want?
Lecture/Discussion

Doom Spa VII: Shower for Humans and Horses / Sounds and Songs for Sun Creatures
Roseline Rannoch, Linda Spjut

Einst war sie MISS RIMINI
Manon
"In the seventies, a nice young lady goes on vacation in Rimini. There, she almost accidentally participates in a beauty contest. She actually gets crowned Miss Rimini, with a bow, crown and five minutes of glamour. This is not nothing. It's the new millennium. What has become of her? Is she still alive? In Monte Carlo, Berlin or in Rorschach? Did she get married, have a career as an actress, a nail studio, or is she in rehab? About fifty times, MANON slips into the skin of her protagonist." Filmscreening followed by a Skype conversation with MANON Skype Conference After Filmscreening

High Tech Séance
Lina Launhardt, Claudia Zweifel
"operating" structures, spread widely throughout the 19th century. We present an experience, combining current knowledge of physics, biochemistry, neurology and psychology with ancient techniques of "enchantment". Contrary to a transhumanist ideology, we consider the body as an already highly developed "hardware", which has always had the inherent ability to experiences outside of space and time, when stimulated with special and simple techniques Experience

Progress vs Regress
Melanie Bonajo
The film "Progress vs Regress” by Melanie Bonajo considers how technical inventions change social relationships from the perspective of an older generation. The film investigates how the myth of technical progress affected and continues to affect attitudes towards labor, money, time and emotions. Will some emotions become extinct because of our obsession with material objects?

Botox to Stay. Cindy Shermans aktuelle Frauenfiguren.
Hanne Loreck
How can we consider aging by means of Cindy Sherman's female figures of the Untitled film stills of the late 1970s and the latest 'actresses' (2016) with their reference to the glamorous femininity in Hollywood cinema of the 1920s? What medium does the artist choose to stage physical and social age(s)? In what ways does Sherman let image and obsession with status 'age'? The lecture examines the changing role of the grotesque with a reference to "sex", "beauty" and "self-design".

Immortal Fembot

The filmscreening „Immortal Fembot“ centres around topics of artificial intelligence, robots as assistants and androids as companions in films from a feminist point of view. The aspects of interest range from a re-definition of gender through technological progress, the gendering of the machine through exaggerated attributes, the role of an identified gender for the convincing simulation of artificial intelligence, up to examinations of consciousness and feelings, not only those of the machine but also of (wo)man. In a talk with director Tatjana Turanskyj, Anne Cathrin Ulikowski will examine these topics by way of exemplary filmscenes.
